Plant preservation

Nature, an area to explore and preserve

preservation-plantes.jpg

Nature offers us a wonderful field of exploration and is a treasure to be preserved: approximately 40% of our turnover today comes from plant-based resources. More than 220 plant species are used in the group’s products, some 11,000 plant species and approximately 20,000 plant samples are studied in research programs, and nearly 1,200 are stored at our Botanical Conservatory, 40% of which are protected. Preservation of our plant heritage is a major aspect of the Botanical Expertise Pierre Fabre approach.

Our main activities

Our concern is to combine economic performance with environmental and plant protection, by:

  • Respecting the principles of the Rio Convention as well as local biodiversity access regulations
  • Respecting the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES)
  • A CITES-certified botanical conservatory in Soual (Tarn, France) containing close to 1,200 species, 40% of which are protected
  • For non-cultivatable plants, defining collection management plans in order to protect the resource's sustainability
  • Cultivation primarily without the use of chemical treatments, and in certain cases, in accordance with organic agriculture criteria
  • Rhealba® Oat, the plant at the origin of Laboratoires Dermatologiques A-Derma's flagship active ingredient, is cultivated in this way
  • Absolutely no use of genetically modified (GM) plants
  • The Gaillac (Tarn, France) active ingredient extraction and production plant is certified ISO 14001, an environmental management standard
  • Preferential use of "green" solvents when manufacturing our extracts
  • Preservation, education and protection projects, carried out by Klorane Botanical Foundation
  • Participation in the restoration of the Banyuls-sur-Mer botanical gardens (Pyrénées-Orientales, France)
  • Creation of the Ranopiso Arboretum in Madagascar

A few figures

approvisionnement-plantes2.jpgProcurement, cultivation and extraction

Procurement of 99% of the plants used by the group has zero impact on the resources' sustainability.

90% percent of the plants used by the group are cultivated with no use of chemical phytosanitary treatments (including the group's most extensively used plants: Ruscus, Serenoa, Periwinkle) or in accordance with organic agriculture criteria.

Over 60 plants are organically cultivated, including:

  • Rhealba® Oat, the plant from which the key active ingredient used by A-Derma dermatological Laboratories is derived;
  • A-Derma calendula (baby product line) and cornflower (eye make-up removing line), which are plants used by Klorane Laboratories;
  • argan, used in the Argane range by the Galénic brand;
  • shea butter, used by the René Furterer brand
  • Over 90% of the volume of plants extracted in our Gaillac plant are recycled (through composting)
  • 77% of our plant active ingredient production processes use green solvents, i.e. of natural or renewable origin

Conservation and protection

  • Number of botanical specimens at the Pierre Fabre Botanical Conservatory: 8,000
  • Number of plants kept at the Pierre Fabre Botanical Conservatory: around 1,200 species, 40% of which are protected
  • Number of species kept at the Ranopiso Arboretum: 350
