Botanical Conservatory and Soual factory(Tarn, France): a richness in biodiversity

An ornithological diagnosis and analysis of flora, insects and habitats were carried out at the sites of Pierre Fabre Botanical Conservatory and the Soual factory in 2010 and 2011. This study was led jointly by the Tarn Society of Natural Sciences and the League for the Protection of Birds. Forty-eight species of bird, including 40 breeding species, were identified. Ten other species may have been present. Of all these bird species, 31 are protected nationally in France. Regarding flora and habitats, more than 220 species were identified. Following this diagnosis, a number of birdhouses were installed.

Toulouse (Haute-Garonne, France) research center: Recolonizing a devastated site

In 2012, an inventory of flora and insects was also made at the Pierre Fabre Research Center at the Toulouse Oncopole. Seventy-four plant species and 12 insect species were identified with the help of the Tarn Society of Natural Sciences. These numbers show the recolonization of the site at the location of the former AZF (AZote Fertilisant, i.e. nitrogen fertilizer) factory in Toulouse, which was destroyed in an explosion in 2011.

In 2013, a photo exhibit of this project was held at the site to raise employees’ awareness of the importance of respecting the biodiversity around them every day.

Terre d’Avoine (Tarn, France): Discovering a rare and threatened plant

During the botanical inventory* at the Terre d’Avoine site and surrounding agricultural land, over 100 species were identified including Nigella gallica (Ranunculaceae), a species of field flower* that is extremely rare in France and had been considered extinct in the early 1980s. Since then, it has been identified again in the southwestern part of the country. This threatened species is protected on a national level. It grows only on the edges of cultivated fields. Its survival depends on environmentally respectful farming. The use of organic principles for the cultivation of Rhealba® Oat* has allowed the return of Nigella gallica and should provide optimal conditions for its survival in the future.

Voluntary farmer: Participation in the biodiversity agricultural observatory

We participate as voluntary farmers in the wild pollinator observation protocol for the Biodiversity Agricultural Observatory (Observatoire Agricole de la Biodiversité, OAB) in order to contribute to the monitoring on a national scale of a biodiversity indicator. To do so, we have set up solitary bee houses at our Gaillac, Soual and Terre d’Avoine (Tarn, France) sites. The OAB project was started in 2009 in order to, for one, better understand ordinary biodiversity in the agricultural environment. Also, to respond to a lack of monitoring indicators of the state of biodiversity on agricultural land in order to qualify the link between agricultural practices and biodiversity. The National Natural History Museum in partnership with the University of Rennes 1 and a CNRS* laboratory, LADYSS**, are the scientific coordinators of the OAB, an initiative of the Ministry of Agriculture.
