A-DERMA and Arbres Paysages Tarnais Plant Hedges

22 March 2021

1300 METERS OF RURAL HEDGES PLANTED BY

EMPLOYEES OF THE A-DERMA BRAND

AND THE ARBRES & PAYSAGES TARNAIS ASSOCIATION

TO COMBAT GLOBAL WARMING

Castres (France) - On Thursday, March 4, 2021, the Arbres & Paysages Tarnais association, together with students from Inéopole Formation in Brens and employees of the Pierre Fabre group’s A-DERMA brand, will plant 1.3 km of rural hedgerows on agricultural land in St Sulpice (Tarn), along the edges of the plots belonging to Pierre Fabre Laboratories. The A-Derma brand has been doing this every year since 2015, resulting in a total of 6092 linear meters of hedgerows being planted: enough to offset 657 tonnes of CO2, certified by the Climat Local cooperative.

Hedges are excellent regulators of the natural environment. They help to combat erosion, improve water quality, and promote biodiversity, as well as storing carbon and therefore fighting climate change.

This environmentally friendly initiative is part of the Green Mission Pierre Fabre ecologically and socially responsible commitment and aims to:

  • Help reduce CO2 emissions associated with the annual production of EXOMEGA CONTROL, the A-DERMA brand’s flagship product.
  • Serve a bio-climatic function by protecting the adjoining field used to grow Helichrysum (the star active ingredient of the Naturactive brand) and re-establishing ecological corridors on the Plaine de l'Agoût terraces.
  • Unite the A-DERMA marketing teams around a symbolic act of planting.

This annual local planting event of the A-DERMA brand supports the Group’s commitment to its climate strategy in line with the Paris Agreement’s goal to limit global warming to 2°C. It helps to raise employee awareness about the urgent need for action to protect biodiversity, which is the key to our survival on Earth.

A project in partnership with Arbres & Paysages Tarnais

The Arbres & Paysages Tarnais association helped us to select a dozen rural species (dogwood, blackthorn, viburnum, hazel, whitebeam, etc.) to be planted, including a wide range of plants from local crops that are fully traceable from harvesting to planting, under the Végétal Local national brand.

We are proud to work with a responsible brand like A-Derma, especially given that this initiative is part of a carbon offset trees plan that we are partnering with. This plan was launched almost two years ago by the Occitanie region. In the Tarn department, this involves planting over 30,000 trees and shrubs each year, in partnership with the local authorities and the Tarn hunting federation.

A-DERMA has been acting on its commitment to protect people, the environment and biodiversity for many years:

  • The effort to keep the production chain short from field to product reduces transport-related greenhouse gas emissions, thanks to the short distances involved.
  • Rhealba® Oat, the plant-based active ingredient used in all the brand’s products, is a white spring oat grown in Southwest France. It is 100% organically farmed on around thirty hectares of land.
  • The emblematic “Terre d’Avoine” (Land of Oats) site in Puylaurens has been recognized as a refuge by the French League for the Protection of Birds. Thus, A-DERMA is committed to helping preserve and promote nature (fauna, flora, and the landscape), and to following a management plan for its land (green spaces, woodland, agricultural plots, etc.).
  • The brand takes its CSR action even further by contributing to the circular economy: it turns 100% of the Rhealba® Oat pomace from Gaillac into fuel for the biomass boiler at the Soual plant (a High Environmental Value plant).

Climat Local is the first carbon offsetting cooperative in France. It encourages companies to help reduce their GHG emissions by supporting sustainable development projects that are meaningful for them and their activities in France.

About Green Mission Pierre Fabre

Launched in 2019 by the Pierre Fabre Group, Green Mission is an entity embodying a company-wide drive to promote Naturalness and Ecological and Social responsibility. It brings together all the CSR and sustainable development initiatives to ensure increasingly effective performance at every step in the value chain.

Since 2012, the Group’s CSR approach has been assessed by an external body according to ISO 26000. In 2015, AFAQ 26 000 (AFNOR Certification) awarded us the “Exemplary” level - a first for a French company employing more than 10,000 people.

In 2019, Ecocert 26000 (Ecocert Environnement) awarded us the “Excellence” level.

About Arbres & Paysages Tarnais

The Arbres & Paysages Tarnais association is the technical operator in charge of all actions to promote, manage, and develop rural trees and hedges in the Tarn department. To this end, in partnership with the Occitanie regional authorities, the Tarn local authorities and the Tarn hunting federation (Fédération départementale des chasseurs), this year it is helping to plant over 35 km of rural hedges on the property of over 150 landowners.

Known for its expertise in promoting trees in rural environments, the association strives to introduce initiatives for the development of technical programs centered around trees.
